During the 1920's, a French doctor named Philippe Joubert came to visit his missionary parents who were stationed in Shanghai. Dr Joubert was so astounded by Shanghai's diversity, beauty and sophistication that he decided to move his family to Shanghai, which he affectionately called the "Paris of the Orient".
Dr Joubert engaged a French architect to build his family home with traditional Chinese style appearance and French style decoration, at NO.69 Voyron Road (now Yandang Road). The shade of the surrounding phoenix trees and the beauty of the neighbouring French gardens (now Fuxing Park) brought much joy and contentment to Dr Joubert and his young family.
In 1939, the World War II broke out and the Jouberts were forced to return to France.
